Since forming in 2006, marvel has had an incredible time giving appreciative kids a far more violent disco than school could ever legally provide. Here, the conviction of Refused, there, the play-till-you-pass-out energy of At The Drive-in and everywhere a tongue-in-cheek attitude towards causing havoc and having fun.
Musically, abrasive guitars vie with dirty synths for supremacy as songs pump full-pelt through dance-heavy interludes propelled skyward by choral vocal-driven melodies only to smash headlong into jackhammer-savage hardcore breakdowns. marvel’s music is refreshingly unpredictable. As soon as you’ve tied the laces of your new dancing shoes, they’re scuffed to hell together with your chin and elbows by the sudden carnage of the moshpit.
Playing religiously across their 9 by 5 Island home, the boys quickly rose to prominence in the local scene, a height of which being their headline slot for local acts on the Saturday of Jerseylive Festival 2007 (Nominee at the UK Festival Awards for "Best Small Festival") supporting, amongst others, The Fratellis, Kasabian, The Enemy and Does it Offend You Yeah?
Over summer 2007, marvel lovingly crafted their first studio EP at 80’s star Gilbert O’Sullivan’s studio. The EP – titled ’marvel at this fiasco’ - is brimming with ideas, taut musicality delivered with fervent immediacy. Marvel recently brought the party to England with shows in London and Oxford in February 2008 and received an excellent reception from audiences and promoters alike. With recent play on Radio 1 with Steve Lamacq’s Myscene, a planned October tour and an imminent Single launch, marvel’s beginning has been fantastic. But the real excitement lies with what happens next. Whatever that is, I’m sure it’ll be marvelous!
